Albert Haynesworth / On the third day, Albert Haynesworth rests

On the third day, he rested.

That's right. Albert Haynesworth will not give Mike Shanahan's conditioning test a try today. The Washington Post reports that the disgruntled defensive tackle has opted to not try to pass the grueling exercise this morning because he perhaps wishes to rest his legs and give it a shot on Sunday.

Haynesworth skips conditioning test, watches from sidelines

Albert Haynesworth is at practice for the Washington Redskins -- but strictly as an observer. Haynesworth did not take a conditioning test Saturday that coach Mike Shanahan says the two-time All-Pro defensive lineman must pass before practicing.

Albert Haynesworth Takes Day Off From Conditioning Test

Filed under:

Albert Haynesworth apparently Albert Haynesworthdoesn't put much faith in the old adage, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again," After failing a conditioning drill on Thursday and Friday, which prevented him from joining the Redskins for practice, Haynesworth took Saturday off, according to multiple reports.

(Update: Mike Shanahan told reporters that Haynesworth has swelling in his knee and it's uncertain whether or not he'll be able to take the conditioning test on Sunday.)

The Redskins defensive tackle won't be allowed to fully take part in his team's training camp until he passes a set of three 300-yard shuttle runs. Even though he hasn't gone through practice with everyone else, he's still too tired to attempt the test again. Herein may lie the problem with Haynesworth: Can his conditioning be that bad, or is it a desire issue?

Haynesworth's day of rest could simply be a result of bad advice, too. On Friday, defensive lineman Phillip Daniels submitted the opinion that the conditioning test became more difficult the more you attempted to pass it, The Free Lance-Star reported. Daniels said your legs tire and it becomes harder to recover.

Albert Haynesworth / Haynesworth fails a second physical

Albert Haynesworth has failed his conditioning test for a second consecutive day and is being forced to sit out practice again at Redskins training camp. Haynesworth did not pass the test Friday morning, in a repeat of his result Thursday, Day 1 of camp. Haynesworth boycotted the team's offseason workouts and minicamps because he is unhappy with the Redskins' switch to a 3-4 defense and wanted a trade. When he finally returned to Redskins Park on Wednesday, he was told he would have to pass a conditioning test in order to take part in training camp and, even once he passed, would start off practicing with the reserves. Albert Haynesworth Present, Inactive at Redskins’ First Practice

Filed under:

ASHBURN, Va. -- Unlike every other team Albert Haynesworthworkout this offseason, which a disgruntled Albert Haynesworth skipped in protest of Washington's new 3-4 defense, the veteran lineman joined his teammates at Redskins Park on Thursday. Just like those previous workouts, though, Haynesworth wasn't in action.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan confirmed reports that Haynesworth had failed his pre-camp conditioning test, so he will sit out until he can pass. His next shot will come Friday. (Update: Haynesworth reportedly failed his conditioning test for a second time Friday. He will not begin working out with the Redskins until at least Saturday).

"We don't want to put a guy out there that's not ready to go, then something happens and he's out two weeks," Shanahan told reporters. Haynesworth did work out briefly with new Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett once practice had wrapped. He then hurried to the locker room, offering only a "no comment" on his status.

Albert Haynesworth Reportedly Fails Conditioning Test With Redskins

Filed under:

The Washington Redskins have opened their 2010 training camp. Under new coach Mike Shanahan, the culture is expected to change around the team, as the veteran tries to turn this franchise into a consistent winner.

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has been causing trouble virtually the entire offseason. The team never did find a place to trade him, so Haynesworth is at training camp.

Of course, he can't practice until he passes a conditioning test, and that is proving easier said than done.

Friday Walk-Thru: NFL Notes; Labor Disputes Still Ongoing

News about the progress (specifically, the lack thereof) toward an agreement between NFL owners and the players union has come in trickles during the offseason, with the two sides going months without so much as pulling up chairs.

Now that real football is about to start -- the Dallas Cowboys report for training camp today in San Antonio -- it's safe to say there will be even fewer updates and less gains made on the labor front. True, these things always have a way of getting done at the last minute, though this standoff, especially with the dissolving of the salary cap, has a funny feel about it.

But it was interesting hearing from the two sides this week, courtesy of separate appearances on ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike in the Morning." It was as if NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, (right) who appeared Wednesday, and NFL executive vice president Jeff Pash, who was given equal time Thursday, were lobbing their posturing and parting shots before the real football news kicks off and drowns them out.

NFL Notebook, July 19: Shanahan Expects Haynesworth to Report in Shape

Albert HaynesworthHere's what's happening around the National Football League on Monday, July 19, 2010:

o. If Albert Haynesworth is waiting for Mike Shanahan to blink, he might not want to hold his breath.

In an interview Monday with WFAN Radio in New York, Shanahan said he expects Haynesworth to be in camp on time and to be ready to play any position he's asked.

"My understanding is that Albert's going to be there. As we talked before, I talked to Albert right before ... well, about a month after I got the job and I sat down with Albert and said that if he does not want to be part of the Washington Redskins, I'd let him go. I wouldn't trade him, I'd let him go to another football team. But if he did take the check for $21 million, I'd expect him to play any position that we thought was in the best interest of the Washington Redskins -- be it nose tackle, defensive end, if we wanted to play him at free safety...

"So (we) expected him to come in in great shape and do the things we expected of him and that he's capable of doing. Hopefully, he does that. He didn't show up at mini-camp, so guys are going to be looking at him and seeing what type of shape he's in, if he's doing to do the little things the right way. Time will tell. If he is buying in and he is in great shape, we know what type of talent he is and we know he can help our football team win."

o. Following in the offseason footsteps of fellow wideouts Isaac Bruce and Joe Horn, Eddie Kennison re-signed with Kansas City so he could retire as a member of the Chiefs.
