Summer Scramble 2010: AFC North Players to Watch

Anquan BoldinIt's July, the slowest month of the year for the NFL. So what better time to start breaking down the upcoming season? From July 6-23, FanHouse will take an in-depth look at each division to help prepare you for training camp. We're calling it our Summer Scramble.

Coming July 13: AFC North Burning Question, Bold Predictions

Baltimore Ravens -- Anquan Boldin

It seems as if the Baltimore Ravens have been searching for a wide receiver to complement Derrick Mason in their offense for ... well, an eternity. That search appared to end this offseason when they picked up Anquan Boldin from the Arizona Cardinals for a pair of mid-round picks, and then signed him to a three-year, $25 million extension. Going all the way back to 2002, the Ravens have had just two wide receivers catch more than 60 passes in a single season (Mason five times five times and Mark Clayton twice ). Sixty catches is a bad season for Boldin, as he's failed to reach that mark just once in his seven-year career (the 2004 season when he played just 10 games for the Cardinals), and has caught no fewer than 83 balls in four of the past five years. Joe Flacco is entering this third year as an NFL quarterback and has no shortage of weapons at his disposal -- should be good news for a team that was already in the top 10 in scoring a season ago.

Anquan Boldin / In his first practice with the Baltimore Ravens, Boldin performed very much as he did during his first

In his first practice with the Baltimore Ravens, Boldin performed very much as he did during his first seven years in the NFL. The talented wide receiver repeatedly sliced through the middle of the defense, worked his way open and latched onto a pass before turning downfield.

Impacts: It's nothing Boldin hadn't done before with the Arizona Cardinals. This time, though, the No. 81 on his chest and back was surrounded by a rich shade of purple. "I look good in it,'' Boldin declared Friday, moments after the opening session of Baltimore's three-day mandatory minicamp

Anquan Boldin / Anquan Boldin off to good start in Baltimore

OWINGS MILLS – Anquan Boldin accelerated past a flailing young cornerback before cutting sharply toward the middle of the field, a destination that represents familiar territory for the Pro Bowl wide receiver.

Extending his hands after gaining plenty of separation on a short post pattern, Boldin caught a Joe Flacco spiral in stride for a long completion.

Anquan Boldin / Breaston signs one-year tender with Cardinals

Steve Breaston has signed his tender to remain with the Cardinals, according to the team's official site.

Our View: The one-year deal will put Breaston in line to earn $2.396 million next season. On one hand, he'll be without the sure-fired Kurt Warner tossing him the ball anymore, but he'll also move from No. 3 to No. 2 on the depth chart with Anquan Boldin having left town for Baltimore. Breaston should see plenty of single coverage with Larry Fitzgerald demanding plenty of double teams.

Anquan Boldin / Boldin at top of Ravens’ wideouts

According to the Ravens official site, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron stated that receivers Anquan Boldin and Derrick Mason are his “1A and 1B” wideouts.

Our View: Boldin will likely own the number-one ranking all by himself once the season gets going and his addition to the club certainly gives young Joe Flacco a boost. Cameron added that Donte Stallworth will compete with Mark Clayton for the Ravens’ third receiver spot.

Mason returning to Ravens after agreeing to two-year deal

After twice reaching outside the organization to enhance their receiving corps, the Baltimore Ravens secured one of their own Wednesday night: two-time Pro Bowl pick Derrick Mason.

Derrick Mason Re-Signs With Ravens

Derrick MasonThe Baltimore Ravens dove right into the offseason last week, addressing their top need by acquiring a new passing-game weapon for franchise quarterback Joe Flacco.

Getting back a reliable old one, though, was a bonus.

Derrick Mason, the 14-year veteran and Baltimore's top wideout the last five seasons, re-signed with the club Wednesday night, bolstering a receiving corps that added Anquan Boldin via trade from Arizona last week and signed Donte Stallworth before the start of free agency. Mason's deal was for two years, with terms undisclosed.

Mason topped Baltimore's wideouts last season with 73 catches for 1,028 yards and seven touchdowns. The 36-year-old was said to be listening to offers from other teams (Miami and New England reportedly were interested), but also seriously pondering retirement.
