Filed under: Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots, AFC East
It's July, the slowest month of the year for the NFL. So what better time to start breaking down the upcoming season? From July 6-23, FanHouse will take an in-depth look at each division to help prepare you for training camp. We're calling it our Summer Scramble.Coming July 8: NFC East Players to Watch
Burning Questions
o. Is the hype around the Jets justified?
A qualified yes, if only because the mix of offseason additions and holdovers from last year's run to the AFC championship game looks great on paper. We know, we know, paper championships mean nothing in the real world and the Jets will have plenty of work to do to get back to the postseason, to say nothing of the title game or the Super Bowl. But the team should be better than the one that led the Colts after 30 minutes, because the additions of Antonio Cromartie and Santonio Holmes fill huge holes, while a healthy Kris Jenkins and maturing Mark Sanchez are the equivalent of significant trade pickups.
NFL Notebook, June 28: Roger Goodell, Vince Young Will Chat Soon
Filed under: Eagles, Titans, NFL Quarterbacks, NFL Notebook
Here's what's happening around the National Football League on Monday, June 28, 2010:o. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will speak with Titans quarterback Vince Young "sometime in the next few weeks" about Young's recent fight at a strip club, FOXSports.com reported.
"Obviously, we've got to look and see whether there was any violation of policy," Goodell told FOXSports.com, then added that Young is unlikely to face a suspension as a first-time offender of the NFL's personal conduct policy.
The same cannot be said for Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, whose birthday party last week was marred by a shooting. Vick has said that he had left the scene long before the incident occurred and voluntarily met with police officers Monday to discuss what happened.
Still, Vick's prior missteps could lead to discipline from the league. Goodell told FOXSports.com that the NFL is "still gathering the facts" in Vick's situation.

Antonio Cromartie / In the NFL, going broke is no problem

APAntonio Cromartie: the NFL’s version of Shawn Kemp?
It’s that time of year for the strip clubs and strippers to get their own stimulus package — NFL rookies. This in turn leads to the rookies’ No. 1 financial parasite, paternity suits. Take Antonio “Cro’s your daddy” Cromartie. Reports vary as to how many children he has fathered, from seven by his own admission to nine; the fact he has twins probably has confused this Rhodes Scholar as to the actual number. Added to the mix: five paternity suits filed against him in the last two years. Anyone who watched the Chargers’ playoff loss to the Jets last year quickly realized that the only thing Cro hits is skeezers and groupies. The Jets subsequently traded for Cro, but instead of a signing bonus, they gave him $500,000 so he could pay off his past-due child-support payments.

Chargers Look for Tomlinson Heir, Reinforcements on Defense

SAN DIEGO -- Which players are the San Diego Chargers eyeing in the NFL Draft?Chargers director of player personnel Jimmy Raye took a brief break from draft preparations on Tuesday and outlined San Diego's top personnel needs.
"We lost a lot of players this offseason," Raye told FanHouse. "Obviously we need to add to the running back position at some point in the draft, and the defensive line.
"Then you start getting to the point to where we can fill in some areas at different spots. Possibly safety. Cornerback. Those are probably the ones that stick out the most."
The Chargers have three Top 100 picks and seven overall, starting with the 28th pick. Their other draft slots are 40th, 91st, 126th, 159th, 168th and 235rd. The aging defensive line, hit hard by injuries in 2009, seems a good place to address first. Among the key offseason losses to the AFC West champions were cornerback Antonio Cromartie, nose tackle Jamal Williams and running back LaDainian Tomlinson.
"At 28, I think there's going to be a really good player," Raye said.
Raye said he wouldn't be surprised to see a first-round run on offensive tackles, which would drop a better player to the Chargers at 28.
One and only: Taylor signs two-year deal with Jets, his lone suitor
Jason Taylor Spurned by Dolphins, to Sign With Rival Jets
Filed under: Dolphins, Jets, AFC East, NFL Free Agency
Defensive lineman Jason Taylor, despite his desire to stay with the Miami Dolphins, has agreed in principle to a deal with the rival New York Jets. The salary base of the incentive-laden deal is worth around $4 million for one year, according to multiple reports.Taylor spent 12 of his 13 NFL seasons with the Dolphins -- he played with the Washington Redskins in 2008. He was an All-Pro six times and the 2006 Defensive Player of the Year in MIami.
The 35-year-old Taylor reportedly had been upset with the Dolphins, who refused to meet his contract demands, forcing him into a reluctant visit with the Jets. The Miami Herald reported that Taylor will meet with Jets' management Wednesday, when the two sides will finalize the deal for next season.
"He's leaving the Dolphins because they've given him no choice," a friend of Taylor's told the Herald, which also reported the defensive stalwart's emotions as disappointed and hurt. "Logically, he had to go to the Jets. But emotionally, his heart is with Dolphins fans."
A marriage between Taylor and the Jets has never seemed like the logical move. Taylor was vocal about his disdain for the Jets when he was with the Dolphins.
Antonio Cromartie / Bart Scott: ‘When in Rome, do what the Romans do’
The New York Jets are hoping that their series of offseason acquisitions’ history of off-field issues doesn’t continue now that they have a change of scenery.
After trading for wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who’s suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, and cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who has been sued for child support and has seven children with six different women in five different states, the Jets are hoping that their transition will go as smoothly as wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

Antonio Cromartie / Steelers Deal Santonio Holmes To Jets
The New York Jets acquired talented but troubled wide receiver Santonio Holmes from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night for a fifth-round pick in this month's draft, sources confirmed by ESPN.com. The teams have yet to announce the trade. Holmes has 235 career catches for 3,835 yards and 20 touchdowns, but also brings his share of off-field issues, which could explain the relatively low price the Jets paid to get him. The 26-year-old Holmes is facing a lawsuit in Florida from a woman who claims he threw a glass at her, cutting her above the eye, in an Orlando nightclub. He's coming off the best season of his career statistically, after having 79 catches for 1,248 yards and five touchdowns. His presence should allow Cotchery to assume more of a slot role, where he is extremely effective, and take double coverage off Edwards.Holmes has one year remaining on his contract. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take: The Jets have been active this off-season acquiring RB LaDainian Tomlinson, cornerback Antonio Cromartie, and kicker Nick Folk. This latest moves will likely end speculation of disgruntled wide receiver Brandon Marshall coming to New York. Holmes has been a key component in the Steelers passing game and is coming his best year as pro. It's clear however, that the Steelers are tired of his off-field antics. The Jets are poised to feature Braylon Edwards and Holmes in the starting lineup with Jerricho Cotchery filling the slot role in 2010.
