Coming July 8: NFC East Players to Watch

Burning Questions

o. Is the hype around the Jets justified?

A qualified yes, if only because the mix of offseason additions and holdovers from last year's run to the AFC championship game looks great on paper. We know, we know, paper championships mean nothing in the real world and the Jets will have plenty of work to do to get back to the postseason, to say nothing of the title game or the Super Bowl. But the team should be better than the one that led the Colts after 30 minutes, because the additions of Antonio Cromartie and Santonio Holmes fill huge holes, while a healthy Kris Jenkins and maturing Mark Sanchez are the equivalent of significant trade pickups.

Braylon Edwards / Report: No suspension for Edwards

Jets WR Braylon Edwards will not be suspended for an off-field incident in Cleveland last year, ESPN.com reports. Edwards pleaded no contest to punching a man outside of a nightclub in January and speculation was that he would be suspended for at least a game for violating the league's personal conduct policy. According to a source, that suspension won't happen, possibly because this was Edwards' first run-in with the law. [...]

Braylon Edwards / Jets | Looking to have a versatile passing game in 2010

The New York Jets are looking to have a more developed passing game this upcoming season, according to Jenny Vrentas, of The Star-Ledger. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said one key will be the top receivers being "interchangeable" and able to "move all around" the field - an aim which they spent the offseason working toward, starting with new assignments. WR Jerricho Cotchery, who played the "Z" receiver, or flanker, last season, learned the intricacies of the slot position. WR Braylon Edwards, who has played the "X" receiver, or split end, for the past three seasons, was asked to master the flanker spot. WR Santonio Holmes has absorbed as much as he can starting with his familiar split end position.

Braylon Edwards / Braylon likes expanded role in offense

It was easy to find Braylon Edwards last season. He was the split end (X receiver), usually on the left side of the formation. This season, you may have to look around a bit to find No. 17.

In his first offseason with the Jets, Edwards is learning to play the other receiving positions in the offense -- flanker (Z) and even a little slot (F). What do these positions and letters mean, and how do they affect Edwards?
