Already, the early NFC East buzz is all agog about the defending-champion Cowboys, armed and aiming to become the first team to ever play the Super Bowl in its home stadium. With Donovan McNabb and Mike Shanahan joining forces, the Redskins possess the credibility they've lacked. The widespread belief...

Donovan McNabb / Eagles | Donovan McNabb sends encouraging text to Kevin Kolb
Washington Redskins QB Donovan McNabb sent a text message to Philadelphia Eagles QB Kevin Kolb to wish him luck on the first day of training camp Tuesday, July 27, according to Jeff McLane, of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "He told me to take one practice at a time and be patient," Kolb said. "And I said, 'Yeah, I hear you. It's a long season.' That's what I was saying before. You kind of get caught up in the whole realm of the whole season and whatever expectations. Just take it one practice at a time at this time of year and that will help you get a lot better."

Kevin Kolb Favored Over Donovan McNabb in Eagles Locker Room
Filed under: Eagles, Redskins, NFC East, NFL Training Camp, NFL Quarterbacks
It sure was strange to hear talk the Philadelphia Eagles would trade quarterback Donovan McNabb. Things got even weirder when McNabb was dealt to the division rival Washington Redskins. In the end, the Eagles were trying to do the right thing. McNabb didn't want to go to Oakland, and Washington was the only other serious suitor. A deal within the division may not have been desirable, but it was the best (and, really, only) option.
Of course, the organization also probably knew what we learned Sunday. Evidently, it was youngster Kevin Kolb -- not McNabb -- who had the support of the Eagles locker room.
Donovan McNabb / Will McNabb’s "Hell Week" help the Redskins?
While some veteran quarterbacks believe that their responsibilities to their new teams extend only to that which happens after training camp begins, others go out of their way to own a role that involves leadership and team chemistry.
So it is with new Redskins signal-caller Donovan McNabb(notes), who is not only working like a dog at the Fischer Center near his offseason home in Phoenix - he's also inviting his teammates to join him for what McNabb calls "Hell Week". As a tune-up for the team's training camp, which begins on July 29, McNabb told every receiver, tight end, and running back that they were all welcome to join him for a concentrated week of work that began last Monday

Donovan McNabb / Redskins | Plan to extend Donovan McNabb
Washington Redskins general manager Bruce Allen said during an interview that although the team has yet to start contract talks with QB Donovan McNabb, he is expected to be around for years to come, according to Dan Steinberg, of The Washington Post. "We really haven't started (talks)," Allen said. "Donovan is so excited about this new opportunity - the team has embraced him, our fans clearly have embraced him. We'll have plenty of time to get something done with him. We see him as part of our future. We would not have made the trade unless we see it that way, and he knows it ... And we think he's gonna be a great Redskin for years to come."

IMG Academy Proves Boot Camp Before Training Camp for NFL Players
Filed under: Chiefs, Jaguars, Ravens, Redskins
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Training camp for most NFL players doesn't start for another week or so, yet Kansas City Chiefs rookie Dexter McCluster was getting an earful from a couple veterans Tuesday. The mini-lecture was constructive. It was also from members of two other teams.Players, they say, are made in the offseason, but there is no NFL offseason, anymore; not even in the countdown days to camp that once were used to recharge the batteries. For many a pro football player, the hottest days of July are as high-voltage as the rest.
"You only got one release, man, so dudes are gonna get used to that [stuff]," Baltimore cornerback Fabian Washington, a former first-round draft pick, told the kid during a workout this week under an unforgiving afternoon sun. "You gotta be able to release outside -- but also speed release inside, too."
Jacksonville cornerback Michael Coe grabbed the young receiver and tossed out a couple more pointers.
"When you have pads on, you're gonna have to learn to drop a shoulder coming off [the line of scrimmage]," Coe explained, pulling the apprentice closer. "I've got long arms, so I might be able to grab or use my hands to direct you. Dip that shoulder, though, and keep me off you."
Donovan McNabb / Eagles OC: Vick is back
Three-time Pro Bowler impressed in mini-camp
"I think he's back."Those are the words from Philadelphia OC Marty Mornhinweg on Eagles QB Michael Vick."In our mini-camps, you could see that great, great athleticism," Mornhinweg told the Daily Press. "I would expect great things from Michael Vick this year."Vick is entering his second season with the Eagles and is due to earn $5.2 million. A three-time Pro Bowl pick, Vick is Kevin Kolb's backup and the most experienced quarterback on the roster following the trade of Donovan McNabb to the Redskins. (Newport News Daily Press)
FF Today's Take: Mornhinweg is citing the one quality of Vick's game we expected to return after coming back to the NFL in 2009. A bigger role in Wildcat-like formations is certainly possible for Vick as is some goal-line work, but the fact that Philly gave starter Kevin Kolb a fully guaranteed two-year, $12.25 M contract in late April suggests he won't be taking too many plays off in 2010.

Thursday-and-Long: Why Can’t Terrell Owens Get a Job?
Filed under: Bills, Chargers, Seahawks, NFL Training Camp, NFL Analysis
The freezing out of Terrell Owens is reaching the point where it makes no sense. It made a little sense in the early part of the offseason, when Owens was looking for $5 million and teams were understandably uninterested in giving that much money to a guy with that much baggage and that many question marks. But now, on the eve of training camp, Owens is being more reasonable and is looking for a job. And the fact that he hasn't found one makes no sense. The fact that teams that could seriously use him are coming out publicly and saying they're not interested is unfathomable.San Diego Chargers GM A.J. Smith, asked this week about his team's interest in T.O., said, "We're all set right now with our receivers." With all due respect to Smith, that is a false statement. The Chargers, a pass-first team with a rookie running back and Super Bowl expectations, are anything but set at receiver. Their top wideout, Vincent Jackson, is in the middle of a contract dispute, facing a three-game suspension and, according to some league scuttlebutt, on the trading block. That basically leaves them with Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee to start the season, and not a lot of depth at the position even beyond that.
Donovan McNabb / Redskins | Donovan McNabb invites teammates to Hell Week
Washington Redskins QB Donovan McNabb has invited the team's wide receivers, tight ends and running backs to Arizona to work out with him before training camp begins, reports Rick Maese, of The Washington Post. WRs Devin Thomas, Santana Moss and Malcolm Kelly are expected to participate in McNabb's "Hell Week." Temperatures around Phoenix are expected to climb as high as 112 degrees during the week. "It's a different mind set," McNabb said. "I prepare guys the way I prepare."
