Friday Walk-Thru: NFL Notes; Labor Disputes Still Ongoing
Filed under: Cowboys, Rams, Ravens, Redskins, NFL Free Agency, NFL Training Camp, NFL Analysis, NFL Notebook
News about the progress (specifically, the lack thereof) toward an agreement between NFL owners and the players union has come in trickles during the offseason, with the two sides going months without so much as pulling up chairs. Now that real football is about to start -- the Dallas Cowboys report for training camp today in San Antonio -- it's safe to say there will be even fewer updates and less gains made on the labor front. True, these things always have a way of getting done at the last minute, though this standoff, especially with the dissolving of the salary cap, has a funny feel about it.
But it was interesting hearing from the two sides this week, courtesy of separate appearances on ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike in the Morning." It was as if NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, (right) who appeared Wednesday, and NFL executive vice president Jeff Pash, who was given equal time Thursday, were lobbing their posturing and parting shots before the real football news kicks off and drowns them out.
Some highlights:

One Last Chance for LaDainian Tomlinson, Another Aging Superstar
Filed under: Jets, NFL Analysis
In March of 2003, Bill Bidwill stood up at the NFL meetings in his home city of Phoenix to tell the world that his Cardinals had just made "the most important signing in our history.''Emmitt Smith.
Smith was the NFL's leading career rusher, but was about to turn 34, and the penny-pinching Bidwill was paying him $2 million per season. In Bidwill's eyes, he would be the "face of the franchise,'' one that had been 5-11 the previous season, the Cardinals' standard record for most of their tenure in the desert. Yes, Smith was a showpiece -- he averaged 2.8 yards a carry on a team that went 4-12, spent one more year in the league and then retired, conceding recently that those last two seasons weren't exactly the highlight of his Hall of Fame career.
To put this in contemporary terms, Smith's signing by the Cardinals explains why there was so much head scratching when the Jets signed LaDainian Tomlinson to a two-year deal that would bring him as much as $5.6 million over two years. He said a couple of weeks ago that he expects to return to something close to his MVP form.
Sorry L.D. ("LT'' is reserved, at least in New York, for an older former superstar linebacker), you get old quickly in the NFL, especially if you're a running back.

From July 6-23, FanHouse will take an in-depth look at each division to help prepare you for training camp. We're calling it our Summer Scramble.Coming July 8: NFC East Players to Watch
Burning Questions
o. Is the hype around the Jets justified?
A qualified yes, if only because the mix of offseason additions and holdovers from last year's run to the AFC championship game looks great on paper. We know, we know, paper championships mean nothing in the real world and the Jets will have plenty of work to do to get back to the postseason, to say nothing of the title game or the Super Bowl. But the team should be better than the one that led the Colts after 30 minutes, because the additions of Antonio Cromartie and Santonio Holmes fill huge holes, while a healthy Kris Jenkins and maturing Mark Sanchez are the equivalent of significant trade pickups.
Jets contact free-agent QB Russell’s agent, but interest is slight
The New York Jets contacted the agent for free-agent quarterback JaMarcus Russell, a team source confirmed Wednesday, but the chance of anything materializing was categorized as "10 percent or less."

Mark Sanchez / Sanchez ‘great’ after Jets minicamp
Mark Sanchez fully practiced for the third time in Jets minicamp Wednesday, looking healthy and unhindered. I feel good, said the quarterback, recovering from February knee surgery. Physically, I feel great. Mentally, I wanted to attack this minicamp and apply a lot of the things I learned from last season...

Mark Sanchez / Minicamp recap: The good, bad & ugly
The Jets' three-day minicamp is in the books. Let's take a look at three positives and three negatives, not counting contract disputes:
POSITIVES
1. Mark Sanchez is back. He wasn't particularly sharp, but that was to be expected after a four-month layoff. For the Jets, the important thing is that he participated fully in five practices (three minicamp and two OTAs) over the last eight days with seemingly no problems with his surgically repaired knee. He was able to plant hard on the knee, slide in the pocket and throw on the run. His accuracy was off, but let's not nit-pick. His mere presence on the field provided an emotional lift as the team heads into six weeks of down time before training camp.
