Charles Grant D. Orlando Ledbetter of the AJC reports that former New Orleans Saints defensive end Charles Grant has interest in the Falcons. No word on whether that interest is reciprocated by the Falcons themselves, but Atlanta is among three teams that Grant is interested in playing for. Grant was released by the Saints on March 4, after finishing the season on injured reserve with a torn triceps. Ross Tucker of SI.com reports that he should be healthy by mid-April. He played eight seasons with the Saints after being a 1st round pick in 2002. He has been bothered by injuries in each of the last three. Last year he started in all 16 games for the Saints and finished with 5.5 sacks. Grant also may face a future four-game suspension by the league for violating their substance abuse policy in relation to the supplement StarCaps, although that has been deferred as of now. Grant was also indicted on involuntary manslaughter charges stemming from a February 2008 in which he was stabbed in the neck during a melee that ended with a pregnant woman being shot and killed.

Free Agent free safety Darren Sharper hasn't ruled out a return to the Saints, but he did admit that if the Saints had shown him enough love with their early contract offers, he wouldn't be a free agent right now. "If the love was right, that would have been taken care of. The love would have been reciprocated," said Sharper, who settled for a one-year, $1.7 million contract in New Orleans last year but expects more years and dollars this time around after his All-Pro season with nine interceptions and three touchdown returns. Sharper, 34, said he thinks he's got two to three good years left in him, and he said he likes to use Hall of Fame defensive back Rod Woodson as an example. Woodson, was a first-team All Pro and Pro Bowler at age 37. "He's a guy I looked to as I was coming up in the early years of my career," Sharper said. "And I know the way I train and keep myself in shape, I could do that."

Free agency rules changed for all NFL teams because of the uncapped league year, which officially began early Friday when the veteran free agency period got under way.

As one of the final four teams, the Super Bowl champion Saints were affected more because they, along with the Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets, can't sign an unrestricted free agent unless they lose one first.

Then, the player those teams sign as a replacement can only receive a salary comparable to the one the...
