Summer Scramble 2010: AFC East Players to Watch
Filed under: Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots, AFC East, NFL Analysis
It's July, the slowest month of the year for the NFL. So what better time to start breaking down the upcoming season? From July 6-23, FanHouse will take an in-depth look at each division to help prepare you for training camp. We're calling it our Summer Scramble.Coming July 7: AFC East Burning Questions, Bold Predictions
New England Patriots -- Wes Welker
We know that Randy Moss is starting at one spot, but after that it is one question mark after another for the Patriots at wideout as we get closer to training camp. The biggest of those question marks is the condition of Wes Welker's knee. He returned to OTAs in June, albeit in limited fashion, and his status for the start of the season is up in the air at this point.
When Welker missed time last season, the Patriots slotted Julian Edelman into his spot. Edelman did well for a rookie converted from playing quarterback in college, but anyone who saw the Patriots' playoff loss to Baltimore or their Week 2 loss to the Jets knows that the Pats were missing something when Edelman took over for No. 83. That would explain why the Pats brought Torry Holt into the fold this offseason. Holt has seen and done everything during his long career and his lost steps won't mean as much with Moss on the other side. If Welker has to spend the first six weeks on the physically-unable-to-perform list, Holt's savvy might give him an edge on New England's possibly vacant starting spot.

Welker’s Rehab ‘Going Good So Far’
The Patriots‘ 2009 season took a drastic turn for the worse when Wes Welker dropped with a serious knee injury in a relatively meaningless Week 17 loss at Houston. New England had already wrapped up the AFC East division title prior to the regular season’s final game, but opted to play its starters anyway — that decision backfired when Welker tore his left MCL and ACL making a cut upfield, an injury that sidelined him for the Patriots’ playoff loss to Baltimore one week later.
Welker underwent surgery on his left knee on Feb. 2 and is doing what he can to be ready for the 2010 season.
“It’s going good so far. It’s a long process but I feel like I’m making a lot of strides,” Welker told ESPNBoston’s Mike Reiss. “It’s gone as good as expected so far. Hopefully we stay on that track and keep on progressing every day.”

Torry Holt / The New England Patriots have signed veteran wide receiver Torry Holt, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection
The New England Patriots have signed veteran wide receiver Torry Holt, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection who played last season with Jacksonville. Terms of the contract announced Tuesday were not disclosed.
Impacts: Holt had 51 catches for 772 yards in 15 games last season, which included 12 starts. He also spent 10 seasons with the St. Louis Rams, where he set a rookie record with seven receptions and 109 yards receiving in their 1999 Super Bowl win over Tennessee. Holt has averaged 77.4 yards per game in his 11-year career, third-best in NFL history. He is 10th in the league with 13,382 yards receiving and 11th with 920 receptions.

Patriots Sign WR Torry Holt
Filed under: Jaguars, Patriots, AFC East, AFC South, NFL Free Agency
The New England Patriots are armed with a slew of draft picks this weekend -- including a trio of second-round choices -- but signing veteran Torry Holt may nudge wide receiver a little down their priority list.Holt, who turns 34 in June, reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with the club Tuesday. He played the 2009 season in Jacksonville after 12 seasons with the St. Louis Rams, who drafted him in the first round out of North Carolina State in 1999.
The Rams and Holt won a Super Bowl together in his 1999 rookie season. They lost one together two years later -- to the Patriots.
A seven-time Pro Bowl selection, Holt ranks 11th on the all-time receptions list with 920 catches. That rates fifth on the active NFL list, just six behind his newest teammate, Randy Moss. He'll instantly become a respected locker room presence with the Patriots.
After his release by the Jags in February, Holt had hoped to sign with Chicago and be reunited with new Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz, ringmaster of the "Greatest Show on Turf" air shows in St. Louis. The Bears weren't interested, but Holt ended up in an equally pass-happy system.

Jaguars Will Release Torry Holt and Tra Thomas on Monday
Filed under: Jaguars, AFC South
The Jaguars are going to get an early start on their offseason on Monday by cutting ties to a pair of veterans who were with the team for one year. Wide receiver Torry Holt and offensive tackle Tra Thomas will both be given their walking papers when the league allows teams to start waiving players after the Super Bowl. Neither move is particularly surprising. The Jaguars drafted a pair of young tackles -- Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton -- early in the 2009 draft and Thomas, who signed as a free agent in March, only played in eight games all season. He started 165 games for the Eagles between 1998 and 2008, but it's hard to think he has much left in the tank at 36.
