The Jacksonville Jaguars had seven of eight home games blacked out last season.Fewer than 50,000 went to each of their first six home dates, and it wasn't until the Jags rolled to a 7-5 record -- and wedged themselves into the playoff hunt -- that the locals got interested enough to send 60,000 to the season's final two games at Jacksonville Memorial Stadium. The opponents were the in-state rival Miami Dolphins and then-undefeated Indianapolis Colts. The Jags lost both, along with their final two road games, to finish 7-9.
So what is there to get the North Florida masses excited about with the 2010 Jags?
How 'bout bringing in the guy who played the last four years about 90 minutes away and fared fairly well for the state's flagship university?
Yeah, that guy.

Here is what the Jets have planned for LaDainian Tomlinson:-- He arrived from Minnesota here on Thursday night and the Jets welcomed him into his hotel room with a gift basket for his first child, expected this summer.
-- He had breakfast on Friday morning with a group of team executives that included general manager Mike Tannenbaum, head coach Rex Ryan and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
-- He was given a tour of the Jets facilities.
-- He met with coaches to talk about the Jets offense and the role he would play.
-- He will take a tour of the Jets' new stadium Friday afternoon, complete with a police escort to the facility.
-- He will have dinner with Jets staff at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.
At each step of the itinerary, the Jets are hoping to convince this future Hall of Fame back that they have the home he seeks, the place where he can finish his NFL career and the spot that gives him a solid chance to win his first Super Bowl ring.

Hopefully, peace comes now to the family and friends of Darrent Williams. His killer, Willie D. Clark, is no longer alleged, but guilty.Can we now ask all professional athletes to pause and learn from this? To avoid putting yourselves and your money, status, talent and misguided machismo in these can't-win scenarios? You may think you've earned your way into bottle service in the VIP room at the club, behind the velvet rope or inside the darkened hallway, where your young, entitled nights can be enjoyed freely and recklessly.
You are targets. You are not invincible. You may cause trouble or invite it, simply because of who you are, who you are with or what you think you may be.
Please. Stop and think. Look at what can happen.

The NFL's free safety wheel continues to spin this offseason. Less than a week after dealing Kerry Rhodes to Arizona -- who needed to replace Antrell Rolle -- the Jets found Rhodes' replacement in free agent Brodney Pool.Pool reached an agreement with New York Thursday night. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Pool's deal will be for one year and $1.3 million.
Cleveland made Pool the 34th-overall pick in the 2005 draft and he developed into a steady starter for the Browns. Pool started all 16 games in 2007, 15 in 2008 and 10 last year. But he missed the final five games of 2009 with a concussion.

The news just gets worse and worse for Ron Mexico Roethlisberger. That's bad news for all of us who want to take the high road.
Anytime somebody is accused of a crime we invoke "innocent until proven guilty" and giving people the "benefit of the doubt." Then I read where Roethlisberger was in a bathroom last Friday night.
Not just any bathroom, but a women's bathroom.
At a college bar. At 2:30 a.m. With an underage 20-year-old coed.
This raises a few questions: Was the men's room full? Is Big Ben a closet transvestite? Did the girl request a private reenactment of Roethlisberger's 2006 motorcycle crash?
Yeah, that's it. Then she slipped, banged her head, and encountered Roethlisberger's DNA and suddenly got $$$ in her eyes.

Browns president Mike Holmgren said Thursday that quarterback Brady Quinn has not played enough to clearly determine his future, and added that reports the team was "shopping" Quinn were overstated."You can say that about any of our players -- at this time of year," Holmgren said. "We talk to a lot of people.
"I have a system I believe in in developing quarterbacks, an approach that I think works," he added. "[Quinn has] only played 12 games. That's not enough time."
Holmgren said his intent is to strengthen the entire quarterback position and have one player emerge as the starter. His first step was acquiring Seneca Wallace from Seattle via trade, the second releasing Derek Anderson. Quinn should be part of the 2010 group -- though a dramatic trade or free agent signing could always change the situation. He did acknowledge that sometimes it helps a player to get a fresh start.

Some players are considered "throwbacks.'' Merlin Olsen was a glimpse of the future.Olsen, who died Thursday at age 69, came out of Utah State in 1962 as the seventh overall pick in the NFL draft, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive tackle who was an athlete first in an era when most players his size were simply big bodies picked to stuff the middle and stop the run.
"He was way ahead of his time,'' said Gil Brandt, who in those days was in the first decade of a 30-year career as personnel director of the Dallas Cowboys.
"He was strong, he was fast, he was like the athlete of today back in 1962. He was as good as I've ever seen at that position. If there's someone better, I don't know who it is.''
Willie Clark Found Guilty of Murdering Broncos’ Darrent Williams

Over three years after the death of Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams, Willie Clark was found guilty of murder Thursday. Clark, 26, was facing 21 charges, including two counts of first-degree murder.After 11 days of testimony from over 40 witnesses, the jury deliberated for around 12 hours over the course of three days before arriving at the guilty verdict. Clark now faces life in prison.
According to the prosecution, Clark was involved in an altercation with people in Williams' group of friends at a New Year's (2007) party, and later was one of two gunmen who peppered Williams' Hummer limo while passing by in a white Chevy Tahoe. Clark will be detained in a Denver area jail, where he's also still facing another, unrelated murder charge.

Judging by the relatively tame media coverage associated with Ben Roethlisberger's alleged sexual assault down in Georgia, you'd think that the case isn't that serious.You'd be wrong.
Big Ben is in a huge mess, one that could potentially keep him off the field this upcoming season and more. As a lawyer, it's amazing to me that this story hasn't gotten more attention than it has. Given that Big Ben is one of the 20 most famous players in the NFL, a two-time Super Bowl winner, and the quarterback of one of the five most popular teams in the most popular sport in American history, the relative lack of solid analysis is astounding.
Particularly in our heightened media environment when merely cheating on your wife can lead the news cycle for months. The comparative media silence is deafening.
I think that's partly because people don't realize the seriousness of these allegations or the penalties that could ensue.
I spent the past two days on the phone with Georgia lawyers -- public defenders and district attorneys -- the men and women who would typically defend or prosecute criminal cases in Georgia courts to discuss the particulars of this incident. Here's what I learned.
Merlin Olsen Dies at 69

Merlin Olsen, a member of both the Pro Football and College Football Halls of Fame, died Thursday morning at the age of 69.Olsen had been diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2009 and had since been undergoing chemotherapy treatments, according to the Cache Valley Daily.
Olsen was inducted in the NFL's Hall of Fame after a dominating 15-year career as a defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Rams, where he was part of the "Fearsome Foursome." He earned 14 consecutive Pro Bowl honors in his first 14 seasons and was a six-time first-team All-Pro selection. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1982.
In 1994, Olsen was named to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, alongside legendary defensive tackles "Mean" Joe Greene and Bob Lilly.

The Redskins are making Albert Haynesworth a 3-4 defensive end? The last quarterback standing in Cleveland will be...none of them? It's clear that LaDainian Tomlinson, who was released by the San Diego Chargers last month, is past his prime. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have suitors now that he's an unrestricted free agent.Tomlinson is in Minnesota on Thursday visiting the Vikings, and he reportedly has a visit scheduled for Friday with another team that lost a conference championship game.
Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Tomlinson is scheduled to head to New York after he's done with his business in Minnesota, and that he'll pay a visit to the Jets on Friday.

The Baltimore Ravens dove right into the offseason last week, addressing their top need by acquiring a new passing-game weapon for franchise quarterback Joe Flacco. Getting back a reliable old one, though, was a bonus.
Derrick Mason, the 14-year veteran and Baltimore's top wideout the last five seasons, re-signed with the club Wednesday night, bolstering a receiving corps that added Anquan Boldin via trade from Arizona last week and signed Donte Stallworth before the start of free agency. Mason's deal was for two years, with terms undisclosed.
Mason topped Baltimore's wideouts last season with 73 catches for 1,028 yards and seven touchdowns. The 36-year-old was said to be listening to offers from other teams (Miami and New England reportedly were interested), but also seriously pondering retirement.
Report: Roethlisberger Denies He Had Sexual Intercourse With Accuser

Ben Roethlisberger told police there was no sexual intercourse with the woman who is accusing the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback of assault, a Pittsburgh television station reported on its Web site Thursday night. Citing unnamed sources, KDKA-TV reported Roethlisberger conceded to Milledgeville, Ga., police the night of the incident that he had contact with the 20-year-old college student, but said a sexual act was not consummated inside the dance club. Roethlisberger said the woman injured her head after she slipped in the bathroom.
The accuser immediately reported the incident to police and was treated at an area hospital. TMZ.com reported Thursday that police have taken possession of the security tapes from the Capital City Night Club.
"We intend to finish this case in a way that neither his liberty nor his future is damaged," Roethlisberger's attorney Ed Garland told KDKA-TV.
The Atlanta law firm hired by the family of the accuser has asked for for discretion as the case progresses.
"Their daughter has done the right thing and reported this matter to the police," lawyer Lee Parks said in a statement. "She has been, and will be, available to the authorities to assist them in the criminal investigation. While the matter is under investigation, we ask you to respect her privacy, keep her name out of the press and allow the family space and time to heal."
