Cam Newton’s foot injury reportedly not improving, will see specialist – Yardbarker

Many fans assumed Kyle Allen’s poor performance in an embarrassing blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers last week meant Cam Newton would be getting his starting job back sooner rather than later, but the former MVP’s injured foot needs to heal first. Apparently that is not going as well as he and the team hoped it would. Newton will visit with a specialist on Friday for a further evaluation on his foot injury, ESPN’s Josina Anderson first reported. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Newton is a “long way off” from returning to the field and his foot is not feeling better. That is obviously troubling news for the Panthers. Newton has a Lisfranc injury, and those have a tendency to linger and carry a risk of re-aggravation. He opened up about the issue a month ago and said he needs to wait until his is 100% healthy before playing again, and it does not sound like he is anywhere close to that level. Allen had played extremely well in four games — all wins — prior to last Sunday’s 51-13 loss to the 49ers
